These Are the Top 10 Restaurants in the World Right now
Today, the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list was announced. New York City’s very own Eleven Madison Park nabbed first place. An American institution has not taken number one since 2004 when Thomas Keller’s California-based French Laundry won for the second time in a row. While no other U.S. restaurants made the top 10 this year, Blue Hill at Stone Barns came in at number 11, and Le Bernardin got 17th place. Three other American restaurants—Chicago’s Alinea, San Francisco’s Saison, and New York’s Cosme—were also in the top 50. Below, the 10 best restaurants in the world.
1. Eleven Madison Park, New York, USACo-owners Will Guidara and Daniel Humm were announced as the winners in Melbourne today. Reservation requests may soon spike, but be forewarned—the restaurant will be temporarily closing this June for renovations. Guidara and Humm will, however, be operating a pop-up in the Hamptons this summer.
2. Osteria Francescana, Modena, ItalyModena has long been an underrated food capital of Italy. And lately, it has become a bona fide hot spot. Osteria Francescana’s new award celebrating chef Massimo Bottura, will undoubtedly only crank up the buzz.
3. El Celler de Can Roca, Girona, SpainThe contemporary Catalan classic in the making is perhaps best known for its “Rainy Forest” dish. Unsurprisingly, the Roca brothers’ restaurant has been ranked number one twice before. Top three, however, isn’t all that bad.
4. Mirazur, Menton, FranceArgentine Mauro Colagreco serves up innovative takes on Mediterranean food at his restaurant on the French Riviera. The menu’s fresh, produce-heavy dishes have helped seal its stellar reputation.
5. Central, Lima, PeruThe top-ranked Latin American restaurant this year, Central aims to explore Peru’s biodiversity. Chefs Virgilio Martínez and Pia León are a husband-and-wife team clearly achieving an ecologically-inclined work-life balance.
6. Asador Etxebarri, Axpe, SpainVictor Arguinzoniz’s rural restaurant is as flavorful as it gets. Wondering what to order? Crunchy corn with sea urchin is a specialty.
7. Gaggan, Bangkok, ThailandThis is the third consecutive year that chef and owner Gaggan Anand’s restaurant has been named Asia’s top restaurant. Its modern take on Indian cuisine is phenomenal, but its emoji-packed menu is also quite a crowd-pleaser.
8. Maido, Lima, PeruPeru—and Latin America’s—second restaurant on the top 10 comes in at number eight. Chef Mitsuharu Tsumura was born in Lima and then studied in both the U.S. and Japan. Maido’s tasting menu gives a colorful tour through Tsumura’s vision of Japanese cuisine today.
9. Mugaritz, San Sebastian, SpainFlowers may not sound like the most appetizing earth-grown item to evoke on a menu, but Mugaritz’s “dried hydrangea of cocoa” should change that. Still not impressed? Andoni Luis Aduriz’s Basque restaurant serves guests 20 courses in any given meal.
10. Steirereck, Vienna, AustriaRounding out the top 10 is Heinz Reitbauer’s Steirereck. Its area of expertise is modern Austrian dishes such as freshwater mountain fish cooked at the table in hot beeswax.
